1) The Democrats have already kind of become that sort of Republican. (What party would Dwight Eisenhower belong to today?)
2) The Republicans can't afford to neglect "the base" because they are so numerous and motivated and wealthy.
So I don't have a lot of hope for a dramatic reinvention. Hopefully we can ride this momentum for a while and keep edging the extremist wing out of positions of power until hearts and minds (and, frankly, demographics) change.
