Aha, so you are the one who nominated Brother Dusty Feet! Are you by chance a fan of any other Sutcliff works? I have not read that one but have devoured what else I could get my hands on.
I'd definitely rec it. It's a coming of age story, set in tudor england, of a boy who joins a travelling theatre company to get away from his cruel aunt and uncle. I love it, it's probably my favourite of her books. I'm a fan, but notin fandom really-- haven't seen the film or anything. I think I probably have more access to her books, given that they are circulating in second hand shops etc. over here, and were reprinted relatively recently. So I assume you've read the Roman ones, have you read the viking ones? There's also one about Boudicca, Song for a Dark Queen, which is a lot darker than the other books she wrote. It's gorgeous, but dark.
I have read what I could get my hands on, which is not much. All the Dolphin Ring Cycle books including Sword at Sunset (which I loved, started writing an epic story for the canon gay characters Gault and Levin even before I'd finished the book, it's on AO3), and Knight's Fee, The Shield Ring, Outcast, Mark of the Horse Lord (probably my favorite) and The Shining Company.
As far as fandom goes I am one of a very small group of people in Eagle fandom who are more into the book than the movie. I also helped organize sutcliff_swap which was a fic and art exchange for all of Sutcliff's books (we got 18 participants and I think 9 different 'fandoms') and there is sutcliff_fic and sutcliff_talk as well.
I have not read Song for a Dark Queen but I'd like to!
I see you're coming to britain in the near future- any town with a biggish second hand bookstore is almost certain to have something by her in it. She does love her strong male warrior-bond friendships, they're such a pleasure to read! I don't think I've read mark of the horse lord, will look out for it. Witch's brat is lovely too, it's got one of her most compelling characters, Rahere, who set up St Bartholemew's hospital in the middle ages.
I'll check out the Sutcliff fics- see if I like reading it fannishly-- with some books/films, fanfic doesn't grab me immediately, but it's cool that there's a book based fandom for it!
Heh, I was also wondering who requested Brother Dusty Feet. I haven't managed to get ahold of it yet, although it's apparently being rereleased soon as an ebook (I am confused by the strategy the estate is using to decide what to release as an ebook).
I shall definitely be reading it once the ebook's out--I think I've hit my limit on used Sutcliffs to buy sight unseen, as I am generally not quite as enthusiastic about the younger readers ones (although I did quite like Witch's Brat and am currently attempting to cross it over with Knight's Fee).
