Notes: Stella looks through some old photograph albums

Stella sighed, running her dusty hand through her hair. That was the last of the boxes from Chicago sorted out. So many photographs, snapshots of a life that was shared, moments that were tinged with now with the knowledge that however wonderful they were, they were not enough. Ray, grinning boyishly in cutoff jeans, forehead smeared with oil from his car. The wedding- they were so fucking young then. So stupid. Ray had rented the suit, and Stella was wearing a little sundress, hair loose. She had freckles, and Ray looked like he couldn’t quite believe what was happening. He never had, not really. He was always scared of losing her, always eager to do one more thing to make her stay.

“You ok there, Stell?”

Ray, another Ray, her Ray, standing in the doorway with two mugs of coffee. He was wearing slacks and his shirt was untucked. Barefoot and relaxed, with that lazy smile that got under her skin whatever mood she was in. She wondered briefly if she should hide the albums, but left them out. Ray Kowalski knew everything about her Ray, had lived his life, slipped into his skin. Ray looked over at the wedding picture, grinned suddenly.

“You wore a sundress to ours, too,” he said, amused. “The more things change…”

He sat down on the floor next to her, put an arm around her. “Let’s take a look at some of these, I want something to annoy Kowalski with at Benito’s christening.”

She sighed again, leaned back into him, breathing in his cologne.

“Well, this one was taken when Ray figured it would be a good idea to try on my high heels…”
