Dreamwidth is an alternative forum to livejournal. While they are still ramping up, the only way to join is to have an invitation code. Codes are distributed at seemingly random times to existing members.

Dreamwidth is a service very similar to lj (may even use the same codebase) A lot of people have been copying their blgs to dreamwidth as they are concerned lj may get shut down at some point.

To post to DW you need to be "invited" by someone already on DW, through the use of these codes. See this faq for an explanation.

You can read stuff on DW without an account (using an openid id (e.g. your_lj_login@livejournal.com) this allows you some actions but not everything on the site.
