In Supernatural when you are possessed, however, as told by multiple people, the person is ALWAYS aware of what's going on, they just have no control. It also reminded me of that scene in The Bender where Dean is screaming he'll violently kill anyone who touches his brother. God. Dean. I heard it in my head while Castiel and Dean had their stare down.
But. Really. Why doesn't Castiel talk to Sam? Or, uh, anybody up there? Sam is earnest for a path down the right road. He states clearly he's only doing what he's doing because it saves people's lives. So if there is a God like Castiel claims, then God knows Sam. And I don't think Sam is too fucked up he's lying to himself about this, he's more of a swallow/suppress guy than a denial guy like Dean is. And you can usually tell when he's suppressing, like his self-loathing, how Dean is gonna shit a brick when he finds out about the Piccolo training sessions with Ruby, and that Ruby is possessing some random chick. Sam's fully aware of this stuff, he doesn't forget it, he carries it with him because Winchesters are masochists.
So tl;dr, I don't think Sam is going evil. He's still optimistic he can use his powers for the good guys' team. And he wants to redeem Ruby, I think, or at least try to. Which would be way interesting.
Also it's always a delicious angst playing the What If game with Dean, because in the end, I don't think he would pick an alternate life. Why? I forget the title, but the episode where Dean had the 'perfect world' -- but if they hadn't been hunters, he and Sam wouldn't be as close, and in the end, a lovely woman, job, family, and peace were not enough. He wants Sam with him, and be his number one, because Sam is definitely his. I'm not talking about incest here, but it's not really normal either (but then I'm a SUCKER for sibling devotion -- like, see GW or FMA, I'm a whore).
