It is raining out, and I feel like doing absolutely nothing today. So far, I seem to be on track to accomplish my goal :P The kids are home today due to schools being closed for Rosh Hashanah. I let them play Minecraft for a few hours. If there was a good day for them to play videogames, this is it

I think fandom and fic-writing are scorned, not because "girls do it" but because anyone who cares that passionately about [insert book/movie/show here] is a wackadoo. I think, if I hadn't gotten involved with the HP fandom, myself, I might have felt the same way. Like - really? Grown people dress up and get together in large numbers to discuss ... what, exactly? They're reading too much into things? They want WHO to pair up? WTF? And they want to write their own stories, to boot?
Of course, having been in some kind of fandom for 14 years now (!!), ( ... )

I do think that's a good point about passion. Sports has become enough of an industry that the passion is acceptable, and enough people like it. But even looking at little kid activities- you have to search harder to find activities for kids that are not sports (counting dance as a sport here).
I also definitely edged into fandom. It's a slippery slope we slide down! :)

I think sports activities are good for kids because it helps them get out all that energy they save up from being indoors, and it teaches them the importance of staying active and (theoretically, depending on the adults' behavior), good sportsmanship. But, yeah, there aren't as many other offerings, and certain ones are often looked down on as "dork" options, like chess club. Around here we do have a nice youth theater program, and the community college has some nice arts and cooking classes for kids here and there (although those aren't generally ongoing, but either one-offs or, at most, 8-week sessions that do not continue afterwards), but, yeah, this is why MiniPlu had some trouble finding an activity she wanted to do - she doesn't like sports. (She does, however, know that regular activity of SOME kind is required at our house - like, if she were riding her bike on a regular basis, she wouldn't necessarily need a physical activity on the side.)

Your description of Tumblr is perfect.
Yeah, I think there are definitely different reasons as to why fandom is ridiculed. Some is misogyny (like Bronies or Comic Book Guys mocking female fandoms and fanfic), but I definitely think your point about Muggles vs. nerds and aome's above point about passion are overwhelmingly true, too. It's complicated, but Tumblr likes to reduce everything down to simple. (Which I totally did when I was a teenager too, so I can't even roll my eyes too much, but it is why I wish fandom had stayed on LJ.)
