It is raining out, and I feel like doing absolutely nothing today. So far, I seem to be on track to accomplish my goal :P The kids are home today due to schools being closed for Rosh Hashanah. I let them play Minecraft for a few hours. If there was a good day for them to play videogames, this is it ( Read more... )

Have you tried looking on Etsy for HP-related stuff? (Be warned: there's TONS.) But, perhaps, there's someone who makes those sorts of shirts who could, if s/he doesn't already offer it, make a custom one in the right size for Toby. Won't help with the bday gift for his buddy at this point, but might still be worth looking into. I've been poking around at a lot of fandom-related (different fandoms) stuff at Etsy lately, and have found an absolute treasure trove of goodies.

I think fandom and fic-writing are scorned, not because "girls do it" but because anyone who cares that passionately about [insert book/movie/show here] is a wackadoo. I think, if I hadn't gotten involved with the HP fandom, myself, I might have felt the same way. Like - really? Grown people dress up and get together in large numbers to discuss ... what, exactly? They're reading too much into things? They want WHO to pair up? WTF? And they want to write their own stories, to boot?

Of course, having been in some kind of fandom for 14 years now (!!), ( ... )

I should check out Etsy! Especially for some different stuff. I did get the shirt for the kid- I got it in an adult small. It didn't comically drown Toby, and this kid is taller and wider in the shoulders, so I think it will be a little big but mostly fit okay. But I love the unique stuff. (Toby claimed the Ron's Weasley Sweater ornament you made me from me last Christmas :) I love the stuff you can't find else where.)

I do think that's a good point about passion. Sports has become enough of an industry that the passion is acceptable, and enough people like it. But even looking at little kid activities- you have to search harder to find activities for kids that are not sports (counting dance as a sport here).

I also definitely edged into fandom. It's a slippery slope we slide down! :)

lol - does this mean I need to make you another ornament? :D

I think sports activities are good for kids because it helps them get out all that energy they save up from being indoors, and it teaches them the importance of staying active and (theoretically, depending on the adults' behavior), good sportsmanship. But, yeah, there aren't as many other offerings, and certain ones are often looked down on as "dork" options, like chess club. Around here we do have a nice youth theater program, and the community college has some nice arts and cooking classes for kids here and there (although those aren't generally ongoing, but either one-offs or, at most, 8-week sessions that do not continue afterwards), but, yeah, this is why MiniPlu had some trouble finding an activity she wanted to do - she doesn't like sports. (She does, however, know that regular activity of SOME kind is required at our house - like, if she were riding her bike on a regular basis, she wouldn't necessarily need a physical activity on the side.)

I know! It's September! My mother got me started though, because she shops when she sees sales, and she drove up for a visit and brought Christmas presents because then she doesn't have to send them.

Your description of Tumblr is perfect.

Yeah, I think there are definitely different reasons as to why fandom is ridiculed. Some is misogyny (like Bronies or Comic Book Guys mocking female fandoms and fanfic), but I definitely think your point about Muggles vs. nerds and aome's above point about passion are overwhelmingly true, too. It's complicated, but Tumblr likes to reduce everything down to simple. (Which I totally did when I was a teenager too, so I can't even roll my eyes too much, but it is why I wish fandom had stayed on LJ.)

it's also a job where I could go, do my work, and then leave on time and leave my work there. I want to work and I'm more than willing to work my ass off, but I also want to be able to balance my family life.Even without kids, I know this feeling. This inability to finish work at the end of the work day, always bringing work home, has really exhausted me mentally after 12 years. I would so jump at the chance to be at some kind of job where I could just go home at night and be done until the next day ( ... )

I know, right? There's nothing wrong with a job where you can have a life outside work! Even if there are nights your life is just relaxing and doing anything but thinking about work ( ... )

Since I haven't been on LJ regularly for a while, I'm impressed by the fact that you're still working on BSGlee. It really did explode, huh? Is there an end in sight at this point?
