Yeah- life changes are tough, even when they're positive! I feel like things are settling down more though, which makes it a little easier to have some control.
Overall I try to ignore the whole outrage thing on Tumblr, but every now and then it just gets to me. It's just frustrating. I think BSG fandom has managed to avoid the worst of it because we're small- it's easier to keep voices distinct and the fandom doesn't become one howling mass. But yeah.
I'm really amused when I see people who used to EXCORIATE me for saying I was "meh" about Whedon's work (it just never resonated with me!) now lining up with pitchforks and competing over who really secretly hated him first. Oh Internet, never change.
I don't go on tumblr except for, like, baby animal gifs, and I stay away from Fandom At Large. I write my Careers and I have a billion universes for them and I am perfectly happy to roll around in self-indulgent feelings with the like 5 people who understand.
I have a very frustrated relationship with "you should watch media because [social justice reasons]" because I've been told I owe it to [whatever group] to watch a thing because it has whatever. I watched Queer as Folk in university because it was the only gay thing on TV and my BFF adored it and omg I hated the show, it made me miserable but I felt like ... I don't know, it was queer media so I had to. Which is not exactly the same thing as listing all the SJ reasons for watching a good show without mentioning that it's good, but

So thank god I am not the only one who didn't get it.
That's actually driving me nuts, too! Not that I'm meh about Whedon's work, although I certainly understand why people are. It's the "who secretly hated him first" part. Which could all be avoided if Tumblr didn't elevate people to godlike status. If they just said, "wow, this guy writes some neat stuff!", the disappointment wouldn't be so intense

Good to here an update from you! I'm glad that life is good, if busy and exhausting. ♥
I have very similar frustrations with fandom lately, so I've been backing away more and more. It's odd because I still have conversations about movies and books and TV shows in real life, with the people I see regularly, and we're critical of things that have problems etc., etc, but I just can't handle the internet version of those conversations anymore. So much of it seems to be directed at making women--especially young women--feel like shit and call themselves trash and publicly shame themselves for liking things that other people don't approve of, and I'm not okay with that.
Glad you had a great race in Philly! And good luck on the ones you have upcoming. It's awesome that you do that. :)
YES. You made a comment in an entry a few days/weeks ago that made me suspect you were feeling along the same lines, and your point about the conversations making young women feel like shit and call themselves trash is huge point that I don't like. But yes- if I can have intelligent and non extreme conversations about media, I'm all over it! :) Reasons I miss LJ....
You've been missed! But I get it, kinda. I'm not on Tumblr. I don't have an active fandom. I've been posting regularly on my LJ but I don't know if that counts as being 'in' fandom anymore? Dunno.
I thought of you while watching the latest Big Bang Theory. Maybe that show has told all of its stories, but still keeps on going.
Thank you!!! I have been reading your posts- I'm just sometime too tired to comment.
I haven't seen the latest TBBT yet, but I would agree that it often feels like that show has told all of its stories! If it wants to tell more, it needs to go more serious or move some characters along in life or introduce new characters or something.
It's always nice to hear that it gets to others, even though I know I'm far from the only reasonable person bothered by it.
Apparently Schindler's list is the Hollywood version of a not-always-so-great man (although I thought the movie version was clear on this) that centers on the non-Jewish characters and presents people who lived rather than the millions that died. Which I can sort of see some of the points, especially if this had been the only film out there ever about the Holocaust, but it's not. But yeah, if you google "why is Schindler's List a bad movie?" you'll get some links (not to Tumblr) that explain the point of view more eloquently than I can.

Hope you and afrakaday enjoy your run together!
Keeping a healthy weight is really difficult when your life changes in a major way, and employment is a pretty major change. Good luck with that.

And yes the outrage gets crazy. You're not alone in this.
