Sometimes I forget: my LJ friends-list is full of pagans.

But among all the posts I've read today wishing everyone a happy Beltain, one person (hi marmota!) at least did point out another reason that May 1 is significant, something that's blindingly obvious to anyone over here on The Continent: May Day is a Communist holiday. I like May 1st for an entirely different and selfish reason. It's my birthday. I totally should have taken the day off (in honor of International Workers' Day, perhaps?)

Yes, you totally should have. (Though I question whether Comcast would think much of that particular holiday... pity.)

No, they probably wouldn't recognize it as a real holiday, so I'd have to take a vacation day instead. Oh well.

Thanks for noticing! It's rather disheartening that in the last few days I've seen no less than four maypoles, and not a single shout-out to trade unions. It's appalling to get called a communist for advocating things that are now so american that they get taken for granted here such as the 8/40 work week, paid vacation, sick time, short and long term disability, usw... but don't get people started on topics like paid health care, pensions, travel reimbursement, paid tuition and on and on.
