James Sterling didn't consider himself an alcoholic, and he did consider Nathan Ford an alcoholic, and while he also knew they drank roughly the same amount he was happy with both of these assumptions. Still, he was at least a little tipsy this evening, and given he had just put his biggest pain-in-the-ass behind bars that wasn't all together surprising. He was celebrating. Without Nate, his team would dissolve, and he had made sure their faces were all far too well known globally to get away with anything for at least the next decade. He was due a pay rise.
His breath caught as he reached to pour himself another drink and he noticed the curtain move in the corner, a moon-cast shadow falling across his wooden floor. Eliot Spencer stepped into his apartment off the window frame, trademark smirk chilling. Sterling stood, assessing how far he was from each of the concealed weapons in his house and fixing a devil-may-care grin.
"You know we were together, right?" Spencer asked, his voice too low to be real and vibrating down Sterling's spine.
"I'd heard rumours." Sterling grimaced. "Poor Maggie never did have the best taste in men." He took a couple of idle steps towards the dresser ostensibly to put down his glass, really to place himself beside the nearest pieces of his arsenal.
"You do realise, this means war?" Spencer growled.
"I think…" Sterling settled his hand around the 9mm, turning to face Eliot again. The room was empty. "Damnit." he hissed.
There was a pop, and the sound of escaping gas. As it was enveloped in white smoke, Sterling got a brief look at the gift Eliot had left him. As the tear gas enveloped him, Sterling moved towards the exit with a cough. "Damn you Nate. Damn you and your psycho partners."
