I wore my school uniform to school today for Halloween. It didn’t generate quite the stir it did last year (or maybe I just didn't notice it as much), but the visiting officials who had stopped by to evaluate the school were thoroughly nonplussed when they saw the random foreign (boy? No, wait. Girl...?) wearing a Korean student’s outfit and ( Read more... )

Teehee! I wish I'd had the guts to buy a schoolboy uniform while I was in Japan. ^^;;

If we ever have school on Halloween, I will totally have to try that.

Does your school have uniforms? Cool! Yes, you should definitely try it; your students would love it! I'm not sure it would be quite as surprising at an American school, though, since American students are slightly more accustomed to seeing teachers display school spirit. There's not much school-related memorabilia here; and because teachers rotate every four years, they tend not to purchase any school-related clothing. Actually, I was really disappointed to discover I couldn't buy anything with my school's name on it! School-pride pennants? Pencils? T-shirts? Nope. They don't exist here. The uniform was as close as I could get. (I also bought the warm-up jacket my students wear for PE.) ^^

Nice to meet you, by the way!

We have uniforms of a sort, mostly consisting of a blazer with the school patch over a white collared shirt, tie, and dress pants. (Dress pants can be any sensible color, seniors collared shirts can be colored and/or striped.) It's a boys' school, so wearing the uniform would be cross-dressing in a way, even if I wore a skirt. But it'd be fun, and I bet Tony (an alum of the school, straight out of college, the other new physics teacher) has an old one lying around.

The problem is actually that we don't have school on Halloween - the school used to be military, and the kids used to have to wear JROTC uniforms to school every day, and apparently making them go to school in uniform on Halloween was a risk to their physical safety, so they get Halloween off. (Although they'd much rather have All Saints' Day off so they can stay up late on Halloween. No such luck.)

Hi! I don't recall whether we've in fact ever actually met, but you're tangential to people I know, and you write interestingly about teaching. (:

You should propose a "school pride" day or something, just to give yourself an excuse to wear the uniform. ^^

I'm pretty sure we've never met; the last time I visited Swat was in February 2001, which is... before your time, I believe? But you can give my love to the next SWIL dinosaur you see, and they'll probably have a vague idea who I am. Finally, thank you for your praise! It's really nice to hear that another teacher enjoys all my blather about my students. ^^
