Well! I should be revising, but instead I accidentally wrote this. I'm not sure why, or what I wanted to say with it, but I just - I don't know. The finale of Ashes to Ashes left me with a lot of thoughts and questions and musings and I just needed to get them down, so.

Title: The Sleeping Men
Fandom: Life on Mars/Ashes to Ashes

:DDDDDD AWESOME, THANKS. I wasn't sure whether to call it fix-it fic or not, because I didn't really change anything at all, just...nudged some stuff - but I'm so pleased it felt, you know, fixing.

I agree with flecalicious: genuinely feel better about the finale after having read this. WHAT ARE YOU, HOW DID YOU DO THAT. Raised a lot of questions I didn't know I had but now I realise I do, and are interesting--Times when he wonders why not everyone remembers, when he wonders what separates the Alexes, the Sams and the Wills from the Chrises and the Rays. The people who are happy to accept this world from the people who want to tear it down for the sake of the truth, for example, I think that is a good point and I wonder how that works. And, I don't know, I think it brought home the unrelenting cycle Gene is trapped in (or chooses to remain in?), forgetting and remembering and forgetting over and over, with bits erased and thinking Sam's dead or Alex has gone but not really understanding. That bit where it goes straight from taking somebody to the Railway Arms to forgetting everything to Sam's arrival--I love this, encapsulates it perfectly.

Gene Hunt died for no reason, for no reason at all, and the real Gene Hunt never saved anybody, but ( ... )

HOORAY HOORAY HOORAY, not gonna lie, I was basically like "hmm hmmmmmmm" waiting for your words for most of the day, I mean obviously I did other stuff or that would be creepy but like, you know: always writing fic a little bit for each other etc etc. I saw from twitter that you weren't a big fan, and although I got where you were coming from, I thought that the conclusion was so much darker/more intersting than they kind of openly said, which made me desperate to write something. I think it was just a case of wanting to take all the bits I thought were AWESOME and roll around in them (hilarious new guy! bleakness! gene is, in a big way, being manipulated/used and how far is he aware of that!), while giving all the less-good things (what what Keats wtf! why would sam just go!) a little tweak ( ... )
