I've seen a few articles, lately, about people running in to trouble in US airports because they were overheard speaking in a foreign langauge, or wearing a t-shirt with writing in a foreign script This, to me, is a deeply distrubing level of paranoia. And if it keeps up, we're going to have to stop calling them "international" airports. I wonder ( Read more... )

But for him, English might be a foreign language (depending, most Indians are not taught English right away)

How would they react to my "Communist Party" shirt? We're not scared of commies anymore, are we?

I wonder if the TSA is going to release an approved languages chart.
This would be operating under the assumption that the TSA official could directly identify the foreign language people were speaking.

Oh, yeah. I mean, its fear of difference with language as a legitimized expression of it. I think its the climate of fear that empowers the stupid racist assholes.
