My powerbook and I are both sick this week. There's hope for me, but I think my Mac is likely to be a goner. It's old enough that I was sort of replacement shopping, anyway, but I was thinking more like fall.

In any case, I'll be much more offline for awhile. Which is probably not a horrible thing. I've got a backlog of books and projects and

Think of it ass an upgrade opportunity -- can you boot *nix on a macbook?

Very probably, but I'm not totally sure that there would be drivers for everything.

When I looked into running Linux a few years ago on my powerbook, I couldn't find a good way to get my airport card working under Linux. I've heard that this is fixed now.

I'm getting hard lockups that require rebooting, and the airport socket and one of the ram sockets is dead.

That seriously sucks. Has your warranty run out?

It's probably time for a replacement, but if you're sticking with Mac, I'd hold out just a bit longer... the last MacBook Pro refresh had a high-resolution screen for the 17".

If we're lucky, this will trickle down to the 15-inchers for the next refresh, maybe in preparation for resolution-independent UI in a future OS X release. And high DPI is the bomb.

I'm torn along two axes. First, whether or not to take this opportunity to experiment with not having a computer at home for awhile. And, second, what kind of computer to get.

I'm looking hard at the Dell Latitude D630, which seems to be configurable such that it would make a great Linux box. But I'm still trying to decide if I want to jump off the Mac ship. Also, its an unscheduled expense and I'm hearing the siren call of the cheaper models.
