OOC: This one is back-dated to Monday (18 February) and Rei only. Unless someone stole her cellphone. OoIt was still morning at St. Catherine's School for Girls when Rei's cellphone went off. The person calling, however, was Mr. McGaffen, who had grown concerned about Laurian's abscence. It had been four days since Valentine and the girl had told ( Read more... )

There was a ringing sound from the pocket of her uniform blazer.

The Seer was caught off-guard, something that seldom seemed to happen to those with psychic powers. In truth she carried that phone more for the other benefits it provided, making the unexpected call even more unexpected. Being widely admired is far different than having real friends, and those precious few friends who might call were all on their way to their first class of the day the same as herself.

Hino Rei stepped aside, risking being a few minutes late to take the call. Given the small group of people who even had her number, it likely was something important. Again startled, she seemed surprised to hear McGaffen on the other end of the line. After lecturing Laurian, he must feel the need to chastise me for my involvement, Rei thought to herself ( ... )

"Lass," McGaffen cut right through Rei's sentence, "do you know where Laurian is right now? She said she'd be back soon, but she still hasn't arrived, she doesn't answer her cellphone and our Screening department can't find her either. We hoped you would know more about where she is."

"Right now?" Rei was caught off-guard by the sudden seriousness. "She left late Thursday night," she immediately replied, "which would be your Friday morning. I'm not sure how long the trip would take, or if she had any stops to make along the way."

McGaffen would not be the sort to call unless the situation were dire, and the tone of his voice conveyed urgency. Hearing that Laurian hadn't made it back did not immediately worry her as any number of things could have happened along the way. But it was that last sentence that truly left the shrine maiden with a cold, unsettled feeling.

"...what do you mean that your scryers don't know where she is?"

McGaffen stared ahead of him at the answer. Late Thursday night, their Friday morning. The trip wouldn't take more than eight hours, which meant Laurian should have arrived late Friday afternoon. All locairs were equipped with communication systems; in case of emergencies or other unexpected situations, Laurian would have contacted them. Then why hadn't they heard anything from her yet?

It took a moment before he realized Rei had asked him a question. "They can't pick up her presence," he answered wearily. "We know she went somewhere late at night and after that... nothing. It's as if she vanished. Not dead, but vanished. The scryers can pick up spirits of the dead, if something had happened to Laurian they would've known about it. But they pick up nothing. Nothing at all."
