Gradually showing some progress

It had been about a month since she had been rescued from the enemy. Of those four weeks, she'd spent two weeks in coma and the other two weeks in almost complete silence, rejecting everyone who tried to come near her. She allowed Rei in her room, although her presence was still painful to her. But she would rarely speak and any time Rei touched ( Read more... )

Classes were over for the day. Archery practice could wait...instead, Rei had another appointment that took precedence.

She returned to the school's infirmary, hoping that Laurian was up and that she felt like having visitors. Rei no longer visited every day; with the cold shoulder that Laurian had been giving her the past few weeks, that had stopped almost as soon as the girl woke up. Only now did she allow Rei to be near her at all, but even then she seemed emotionally distant and withdrawn. At best Rei could sit on the opposite side of the room for perhaps an hour or so before the uncomfortable silence would force her away. Still, every few days she would try again, hoping for a better outcome.

Silently, almost somberly, Rei entered the room. She looked around to see if anyone else would be there - there was not, as was expected. The click of the door closing behind her was the only sound breaking the stillness of the room. "Hello," she quietly said to announce her presence.

Her hand fell dead on the bed as soon as she heard Rei's voice, and Laurian looked up with an almost guilty expression. It was the kind of expression she often had when she was younger and caught doing mischief. To hide what she had been doing, Laurian nodded in return, meant with a 'hmm' as well, though this thought never reached her vocal chords.

As she looked up now, she suddenly noticed how somber and down Rei looked. It must have been her, Laurian knew it was her fault for making Rei miserable. Maybe some small talk would help her to feel more at ease. She had been rather silent lately.

"How was your day?" she wanted to ask, but her voice had gotten rusty from the long days of silence, and all that came out was a coughing fit to clear her throat.

OOC: I miss a cute "guilty look" picture... though I guess this one will do. XD

Rei stood there, hoping for some kind of acknowledgment. A nod and a cough was as much as she'd receive.

"I hope you're feeling better," she said, stating the obvious but finding nothing else to talk about. Expecting a one-sided conversation at best, meaningless small talk was the best she could do...anything more would be gossip, or her using the injured girl as a sounding board to vent all her frustrations.

She looked down at a small, metal object she held in one hand, almost as if silently debating why she had bothered. "I...brought you some juice," she then added, pausing for a moment before daring to walk any closer to the bed. "I know they give you plenty of water. But I felt that this might help you regain some of your strength." If nothing else, the priestess mused inwardly, it might help with the hoarse cough she just heard.

((OOC: Better than me. I'm pretty much tired of all of my Rei icons. And since she's an established character, it shouldn't be hard to find good ones of her that I could use.)) =P

Tears appeared in her eyes from all the coughing and she was left gasping for breath when it finally stopped. She could only nod to Rei's first sentence and there wasn't a whole lot more she could do to the rest. Though she wished she could let Rei know that juice would be a nice change from all the water they've fed her during the past few weeks.

"Thank you," she finally managed to say in a hoarse whisper. "That... that's nice. I'd like that."
