Reading Rimbaud in French is such an amazing experience.

I look forward to that. But Villon has to come first. His verse has a wonderful sonority, which someone described as sounding like the clang of a centuries-old iron gate.

You will be visiting South Africa? Where do you intend to go? February can be delightful, though a bit hot.

I did not realize that you were of mathematical slant. I studied chemistry back at university.

Yup, professional mathematician, though I'm about to retire. To celebrate my retirement, plus some significant anniversaries next year (my wife and I both turn 65, and it will also be our 40th wedding anniversary), we're spending a month on holiday in South Africa. We'll stay in Cape Town for a week, then rent a car and travel along the Garden Route as far as Grahamstown, returning by a more inland route through the Karoo. We're much looking forward to it.

I believe you come from that part of the world, eh? But you seem to have travelled a fair bit since then, even during the brief time since I started following your LJ. I hope the new phase of your life in Vancouver works out well. I have several cousins living there, and have been there a few times. But my last visit there was in 1974, when the International Congress of Mathematicians was held in UBC.

Thanks for the tip. I'll certainly try to get to Bakoven and Glen Beaches.
