After 40 years of students knocking on my door wanting help with their math problems, you would think I would be glad of a break now that I have retired. But it seems I'm having withdrawal symptoms. I recently discovered the LJ math_help and mathematics communities, where people post problems at all levels from elementary to graduate level, and I can't resist posting ( Read more... )

That reminds me of my days on #gayteen, an Undernet chat channel. I think I spent more time helping my friends with their homework than I did working on my own. I worked with everyone on languages to physics, maths and the natural sciences. It was fun at first but got to be a burden after while and I had to stop it. I wasn't getting the chance to chat about anything but school work.

I'm doing my best to be restrained with these math bulletin boards. I'm trying to leave it to other people to respond to the problems (which they usually do), and only intervene if nobody else does, or if the discussion seems to be going in a wrong direction. In any case, I don't feel any sense of obligation towards them, and I'll only continue to participate in them for as long as I enjoy it.

On another matter, I'm glad that your friend's brother who had the car smash seems to be making good progress. I guess it's still too soon to know whether he's likely to make a full recovery from the spinal damage?

While no ome has really said anything, I can't imagine anyone who has the kind of damage they have described, ever walking again. Miracles do happen but with a shattered disk torn through his spinal column, at least partially severing it and causing it to leak, it does not look promising. The rods they laced through his spine will allow him to sit up nut as to walking? I can't see it happening. I hope I am wrong.
