There's an interesting and heartening little item in this week's Sunday Times. It reminded me of something I wrote about in my journal four years ago, when I gave a short review of Benjamin Britten's opera Albert Herring after seeing a performance of it by Opera North. Here's part of what I wrote then.

Great story. Goes along with a story from the states where a gay boy was named home coming king and a lesbian was named queen.

Very cool. I wish we had more things like that in the USA.

Here on this side of the Atlantic, we can only smile longingly at news of the advances in British social thinking. And to think this is the same country that put poor Oscar Wilde through so much.

At last a Britten lover. I haven't had the pleasure of experiencing his operas personally - other than Curlew River - but I have listened to his music with great distinction over the years. He quickly became my favorite composer sometime back in the last 60's when I first heard The War Requiem and sang in a local performance of Saint Nicholas about the same time.

I also lived in Amityville, NY, for a spell in the late 70's (where he & Peter Pears lived during much of WWII) and tramautized the church choir at the local Episcopal church when I scheduled the opening chorus to A Boy Was Born for Christmas. They did it quite nicely (for a small group of mostly untrained singers), but never quite forgave me. When I scheduled it again for Easter, they simply refused to relearn it.

And what role do you have in the parade?

Opera North are putting on a production of Peter Grimes this autumn. We'll be going to see it on 26 October and I'll have to write a review of it here. It's one of my favourite operas. Last time I saw a performance of it was in 1989, on the day after my mother's funeral. So it has some poignant memories for me.
