I think the lack of response from the government and Bush was terrible... it took days for people to get help and the USA is the most powerful country in the world... just another one of Bush's mess ups...

I totally agree with what you say about government failings. I'm just concerned that we would have seen the same sort of dithering here in Britain if there was a disaster in Glasgow. The city authorities, the Scottish Assembly and the national government in London would all be blaming each other and not getting things done fast enough. That's why I think that the army should have been called in straight away. Only the military has the clear command structure and the resources to get results in a hurry.

You may be right that a disaster of such magnitude is beyond anyones ability to manage. The problem is that it took so long before real attempts were made to help the people. The government seemed wholly unprepared to do anything, when they should have staged materials before the hurricane hit. They had days to do that and it does not appear that it was done. And little was done to evacuate people b3efore hand as well. It is not enough to issue an evacuation order. Then Bush and his cronies tried to put lipstick on their pig saying the federal government was on top of the situation and doing all that could be done. Unforgiveable.

I hope you and Mary have a great time in Spain. I know you will. I bet the grandkids have changed a lot in the past year.

I completely agree with you about inept disaster management (see my comments to brye above).

Re: grandchildren. They will certainly have changed a lot since last September. From what Steve says, little David (now two and a quarter) is even more of a tearaway than six-year-old Tom. They need stern grandparents to keep them in order. :)
