OK, question time. For those reading, how did you decide to do what you do for a living? If you have or had a steady career, how did you get into that and decide that was for you? I ask this because I'm feeling the return of that old angst of wondering just what the fuck I'm going to do with myself. As I've writen before, committing to a lifetime ( Read more... )

Well I ended up working in IT because I could not get the job I wanted in academia. I had a serries of temporary jobs after getting my PhD, but I could not get a secure lectureship. So I started working in IT, and never went back to academia. Quite a lot of other people were in a similar position, and I think I made the right decision, although it did not seem so at the time.

Even though it sounds like you have off days like us all, I always enjoy reading just how stoked you get about your job. You've found a way to keep it fresh, and being able to reference Dio is always a good indicator that a job is going well. I DO know you're damaged, which is why a) I'm glad we're Internet friends and b) I'm sorry we weren't real life friends when we were at NC.
