An amazing thing happened to me in Japan. The night that was the second anniversary of my first night in Japan--August 1--I was staying at a temple on the outskirts of Kyoto with a small group. We were lucky to have been chosen for the temple stay, because everyone else was staying at an ordinary ryokan, a Japanese-style inn ( Read more... )

hey lane! it's me, jessica (hogue)! I just thought i'd drop by and say hi :) How's Berkeley life treating you this semester? Great, I hope! Things over here in Japan are going well; at the moment i'm working at the Osaka Prefectural Government Office as a CIR. (sooo happy i didn't end up in the inaka! haha) I was just wondering if you could add me to your friends list (i noticed that you have your journal set to friends only now). Let's keep in touch! take care, jessica

Unfortunately I won't be in town for new years! I'm heading back to San Diego for the holidays. Osaka in general is really great; I'm definitely enjoying life in Japan a lot more this time around! Perhaps it helps that I'm getting paid, am getting tons of opportunities to use Japanese, have cool co-workers, and am living in a "big city" environment (i don't think Kyoto can be quite categorized as such haha). Congrats on all the job offers, and good luck making your final choice! :) I'm most likely going to stay on the JET Programme all three years because it's a pretty decent gig and i want to work on my Japanese as much as possible; after that, I have no idea what I'm going to do with regards to career. I guess time will only tell, right? By the way, I was just wondering: What are you writing your Japanese thesis on? If there is one thing that I miss about "home", it's being a student, reading all sorts of novels and learning, pure and simple. It just sucks that it has taken me this long to realize it!

Hasegawa-sensei tried to convince me to apply for Monbusho next year, for Osaka Gaidai, but I decided not to. I'm jealous--I really want to live in Japan next year, but I think, for me, career has to come first right now, and there are just so many better opportunities in New York. I'll have the money to travel a lot, but not the time :(

I'm writing my thesis on Kawabata's Palm-of-the-Hand Stories, the same thing I was working on last semester. You're right--I'm scared about the "not learning" aspect of work too. But I think I will continue to learn, it will just be a different type of learning...
