So, a big congrats to Amélie, no matter what people might say, Amélie deserved it and is a worthy grand slam winner.
You're breaking this news for me, T! Thanks :) And I agree with you on what Justine should have done. But then again... I don't particularly think her sympathetic. I love Kim, she's a lovely girl. But Justine has a sort of fanatism I have a bit of a problem with. I'm very happy for Amélie. Indeed she deserves it. I so hope for her that she'll be confident enough now to win the next Roland Garros. :)
You're right that Justine has a sort of fanatism, which makes her less likeable, but it's that kind of professionalism that has won her slams. She was mentally very weak a few years ago. Now she's one of the strongest players on tour, mentally. The Williams sisters have often been accused of arrogance, but that arrogance is what helped them win slam. The mental part of a game is very important in tennis.
I was so relieved when Kim finally won a slam because a lot of people believed she was too nice to win one. And now Amélie, the other player who was considered too nice to win a slam, has her first slam in the pocket :)
Sorry, I didn't mean to spoil it for you. Don't worry, honey, you didn't! :) I didn't follow the matches and just wasn't aware it was over. I'm really very happy for Amélie, but I too wished she would have won the regular way.
It is true of course that, in order to be a top sports' man or woman you need a sort of ruthlesness. Otherwise you just can't reach the top.
Amélie deserved winning a Grand Slam, but not like this I agree. Poor Justine, it sure wasn't an easy decision. I'm sure she felt pretty awful about having to stop during the finale
I didn't see the match, but happened to turn on the tv just when Justine had forfitted. I have to say, the commentators were none too kind to her, saying that if it was a stomach ache she should have toughened it out... and yes, that she ruined the moment for Amelie who was on her way to winning convincingly.
I have to admit, I don't watch tennis that much anymore, but somehow I doubt Justine or any top player would just quit if it wasn't serious enough... sometimes pain can't be visualized/externalized so people doubt you.
Congrats to Amelie on her first Grand Slam, though.
That's the thing, Justine wouldn't have retired unless she was really ill. It was pretty clear she was off, a first serve percentage of 29% isn't exactly normal. There was no power in her shots, they weren't hit deep at all. She didn't just come up with an excuse like some people claim. I can understand her decision to retire, but I don't approve of it. Justine's only human, after all. When you're feeling sick, the last thing you want to do is jump around a tennis court, you'd much rather stay in bed.
