Outwardly, Sugata Shindo appears to be a serious and reserved young man. Unlike the series' main character (Takuto), who displays an impulsive and often overly-spirited personality, Sugata is less likely to react emotionally to the goings-on around him. He appears calm, collected, and highly intelligent, all of which are accurate descriptions of his personality, but only part of it. Sugata is a complex character, molded by his upbringing and the relationships he forms, making him a perfect foil for the outgoing and cheerful Takuto.
One of the first things discovered about Sugata is how quiet and reserved he is. He rarely speaks to others unless they are within his close, inner circle of friends. And even then, few know as much about him save his "fiance" and childhood friend, Wako. The majority of this is due to Sugata's birth and the circumstances around it. As the heir to the wealthy Shindo family and a native on the Southern Cross island, Sugata has been burdened with responsibilities from an early age. As soon as he turned five, Sugata learned that he bears the mark of a special kind of Star Driver, or pilot of the secret mechas known as cybodies that are hidden under the island. But there are restrictions that come with being this special pilot, and if Sugata ever attempted to pilot it or use the powers with which he was born, he would most likely fall into a coma. Despite this downside, the powers of Sugata's cybody, Samekh, are so powerful that he is forbidden from ever leaving the island, much less pilot it, and ever since he was young, Sugata has been under guard to ensure that if he ever does try to leave the island, he will be killed. This constant reminder of the burdens Sugata carries leaves him somewhat bitter at times, resentful of his duties and of his fate. But because he is determined to uphold those duties, he remains silent and does not let others know what he dwells on. Not even Wako.
But this darker side of Sugata is not always kept secret. The select few that are close to him are aware that he tends to carry a knife on him at all times. Wako, who is much closer to Sugata than anyone else in the series, is fully aware of this and it almost frightens her. As she explains in episode six, she knows how much Sugata hates his own birthday due to the circumstances of his birth. And she fears what his intentions are with the knife he carries.
However, this is one part of Sugata is hidden deep down and rarely seen. In fact, in series, only one person is able to pull this part out of Sugata and that is the series' protaganist: Takuto Tsunashi. When Takuto Tsunashi arrives to the island, Sugata is immediately curious about the other boy, admitting as much in episode eight. He takes a slight liking to him, allowing Takuto to join his inner circle of friends and even goes as far as to encourage him to spend time with Wako, the person that Sugata probably cares for more than anyone else. And as he becomes closer and more familiar with Takuto, as they spend more time together, Takuto's cheerful and determined nature draw more and more out of Sugata than just the initial reserved and intelligent side that Sugata shows the world.
There are reasons, however, for why Sugata allows Takuto into his small world. The primary of these, it is revealed in the final episode, is to train Takuto to ensure Wako will always have someone who cares for her nearby to not only be her friend, but to also protect her. Over the course of the series, unknown to Wako or Takuto, Sugata trains his friend, setting him up as the perfect person to ensure Wako's happiness. He does this because he knows of his role as the cybody pilot for Samekh. And much like his role as an actor for the school drama club that all three friends are members of, Sugata takes on different "roles" to keep up certain facades and to continue guiding Takuto.
This is a clear indication of how intelligent Sugata is, and this intelligent side of Sugata is yet another aspect that makes him the complex character that he is. Thanks to his upbringing, Sugata is highly aware of the island's inner secrets and the nature of the hidden cybodies, especially considering he is the pilot of the King Cybody, Samekh. He is often turned to among the other people he spends time with for background on cybodies and their powers. Additionally, Sugata's intellect has given him a rather open minded view of life, such as when he explains to Takuto that since it's the twenty-first century, people should be follow the philosophy of "free love". This is also another indication of how he leads Takuto down the path that Sugata focuses on. Sugata's intellect also makes him seem quite different from Takuto, who displays a more goofy and almost childish side. But even Sugata is able to open up and be quite friendly.
To his close friends, Sugata is often seen as warm and caring, especially to Wako and Takuto, whom he considers the people he is closest. And this is the side to him that is probably truest. The part of him that isn't acting out a "role". When spending time with them, he even is known to have a sense of humor that allows for deadpanned comments which often lead to teasing. He frequently teases Wako about things such as her hunger. And towards Takuto, he teases him about romance or Takuto's relationships with other girls. Sugata also tends to laugh at the antics of his friends, even if he is not likely to always join in them. It's not uncommon for those close to him to hear him chuckle at hearing Wako's stomach rumble or Takuto's expressions. However, how much he opens up to his friends does not stop there.
Once someone gets close enough to Sugata to find this more open side of him, they find that much like Takuto, he is more likely to act irrationally in order to protect the people he cares about. Despite the possibly disastrous affects of activating the powers of his cybody, and often times despite his focus on guiding Takuto, Sugata is willing to put his own life on the line in order to protect Wako and Takuto. This is never more emphasized than when he first activates its power in episode six in order to keep the enemies from hurting the person he cares about most. The result sends him into a coma that he almost does not wake up from, but when he does, he continues to fight, regardless of how dangerous it is to him. But even if he is willing to put his life on the line, Sugata is also wary enough to weigh his options in a fight, sometimes putting his trust in Takuto rather than taking charge himself, mostly because he has faith in his friend. And it's that faith in Takuto that allows him to guide his friend like he does.
All of these aspects of Sugata make for a very complex character that is not what he appears on the outside. While the first glance or first impressions of a reserved, calm, and intellectual young man are correct, there are more to him than that, as shown in his darker side, his softer side, and his protective side. And though the outward part of Sugata is all that's shown to those that reside on Southern Cross Island, he still remains a highly desired member of the student body who many young women adore.
[orientation]
From early on, the watcher of this series discovers that Sugata is engaged and is quite close to the main female of the series, Wako. This engagement is only by tradition of his family, an arrangement made by them rather than something of Sugata's choosing. And while he states this as early as episode one that he is a believer in "Free Love" and that as a part of the "21st century, we should be free to follow our love", that things such as arranged relationships are something of the past, Sugata still demonstrates strong feelings for Wako. As the series progresses, more hints for how strong these feelings are are given light. In episode 20, Takuto oversees Sugata give a sleeping Wako what appears to be a light kiss on the cheek. And later, in episode 23, Sugata even goes as far as asking Wako out on a date. Eventually, Sugata puts his own life on the line in order to protect Wako, going so far as to join the antagonists in an attempt to ensure his plans succeed. And yet, Wako is not the only girl to receive any attention from Sugata. It should be mentioned that in episode 24, as Keito confesses her feelings for Sugata, he acknowledges them by giving her a kiss. But it should also be noted that later on in episode 25, even Keito acknowledges that Sugata's feelings for her had been out of pity and that Sugata only held feelings for Wako.
In the end, Sugata confesses to neither Wako nor Keito as he sacrifices his entire being (as well as the cybody he pilots) in order to seal the dangerous powers of the Samekh cybody. It's in Takuto, the only other person whom Sugata trusts, that he ends up putting all his faith. Whether this bond is anything more than platonic is unknown, because despite the series' tendency to joke about the relationship between Sugata and Takuto (including
Wako's daydreams, Kanako Watanabe's comments of how Sugata might feel about kissing Takuto through the glass, and even Ruri's mistaken assumption that Sugata and Takuto are a "pretty boy couple"), Sugata never demonstrates any physical or romantic interest in Takuto. It's more likely that Sugata's feelings for Takuto are that of strong friendship as it is for Wako's sake that Sugata sacrifices himself and it is Wako whom Sugata asks out on a date. The only possible hint of anything other than platonic interest in Takuto comes in the form of a stray comment about whether Takuto will come over to visit if Sugata marries Wako. But even this can be interpreted as a demonstration of Sugata's strong platonic feelings for Takuto.
It's because of Sugata's strong interest in Wako, that suggests Sugata is heterosexual.
[appearance]
Slim and very tall, Sugata appears wiry and lithe, but his clothes hide a hidden strength. As an experienced kendo fighter of the "Shindo" fighting style that he is often seen practicing in his family's dojo, Sugata maintains firm strength and has a good amount of build. Once aged up, he will be quite a bit taller and a bit more built, making him an impressive sight.
As for the rest of his features, Sugata has lengthy blue hair, narrow golden eyes, and sharp features, making him seem quite a bit older than sixteen years old. These will be accentuated as he is aged up, giving him the appearance of a very attractive young man.
[wish] To ensure Wako remains safe from harm.

[network post]
[ The video opens with a view of a serious looking young man sitting comfortably on the tatami in his room, tea set out before him with a cup in hand. Judging from his expression, he's already figured out a bit about his new setting. And obviously, he's already been dressed, an elaborate yukata draped around him that he wears with the ease of someone familiar with the style of clothing. After some trial and error with attempting to use his First Phase and relying on the Fansuwoth device for information, of course. Inwardly, he's still very skeptical of the dream he'd had about the crossroads, but given that the location seems like nothing related to the cybodies or Zero Time, he can't assume it's some kind of illusion created in the aftermath of Samekh's destruction.
Outwardly, there are no signs that he is upset other than the furrowing of his brows. This is true, to some extent. He knows where he is (sort of-he still has a lot of questions and a bit of skepticism about the "debt" he's been pressed into), but he's certainly not pleased with the situation.
Calmly, Sugata lifts his tea cup to sip from it before setting it down and addressing the feed. Leaning forward to get a better view of the Fans, Sugata begins to speak. How he came to be here is something he needs to figure out. If he is on an entirely new planet altogether... well, it seems he'll only have one choice: to pay off his debt. Yet another role he'll have to play. Time to figure out as much as he can. ]
This isn't much of a debut, I'm afraid. That won't be for a while yet. Until then... [ There's a slight hint of disbelief in his tone towards the new surroundings, but his lips quirk as if threatening to curl into a smirk. ] I'm looking for someone named Wako and a freeloader with red hair. Has anyone seen either?
[action post]
[ The wooden sword in Sugata's hands shifts slightly, and as he sets himself in a standard beginning position for the practice fight, he allows himself the smallest of smirks. This will be hardly difficult, the client being mostly new to kendo and his own experience being significant enough that he doubts the client will be able to land a strike. Despite this, he's still prepared. Years of training as the heir of the Shindo household have been ingrained so deep, it'd be impossible for Sugata to forget. And what's more... The feel of the sword in his hands is comfortable. A reminder of where he's been from and why he's here.
It's all for Wako's sake, of course. It's always been. And even though Samekh's been destroyed, even now, Sugata is determined to play this new role of an entertainer in order to achieve his goal. If that means catering to those that ask for his teaching, he will.
It's only a shame, he thinks as he bolts forward with a grunt, signalling the start of the match, that the client is lacking in skill. He's hardly the kind of challenge that Takuto's ever presented. The fiery redhead had been the only one to ever present any challenge for him, and Sugata almost wishes as he lands a quick blow to the client, watching the man wince as the sword strikes his padding, that it was Takuto standing adjacent to him. Not that he would ever wish for the other teen to show up in Ukiyo, of course. And it's some relief knowing that Takuto's been trained enough by now to take care of Wako in Sugata's absence.
Hefting his sword into a beginning position again, he gives his client a slight nod. The other man gives a bit of an awkward grin and Sugata obliges him a slight smile of his own. ]
You're improving. However, you're still leaving yourself open to attacks on your left side.
[ The assessment is given bluntly, though professionally. With the ease of someone familiar with leading or giving direction. ]
Next time, we'll work on your defense. [ Sugata gives the eager man a nod. Even though there have been few challenges for him since arriving, each individual that seeks him out for instruction means getting one step closer to paying off his debt. And making sure Wako will be safe. Which is all it takes for Sugata to continue with the natural (though hardly true) smile. ] Until then.
