Two days in a row

Thanks for all the e-hugs and well wishes, friends. They really cheered me up because I love you guys and it is good to be reminded that you are here for me. I would say I am going to start writing more (again) but I know that would end up somehow not happening.

For today I am going to list the books I have read in the first half of 2011:

How was Alcestis? I've been trying to get ahold of it after reading a v. interesting review, but, alas, it doesn't seem to be leaked anywhere, and I'm too cheap to buy books from abroad unless I know I will love them.

I did enjoy Jemisin's novel and am reading the sequel now, while eagerly awaiting A dance with dragons (at the same time preparing mentally to be disappointed).

Alcestis was really good. It was very atmospheric and I feel like she probably did a lot of research to be authentic. The downside is probably that it is a little slow and when I finished I felt like there should be more to the story than their is. But it was a really interesting take on a myth that didn't feel glaringly modern like so many. Also there are some pretty steamy bits and I liked her gods. So if you want mythology and bisexuals and feminist angst I suggest it.

I enjoyed Hundred Thousand Kingdoms too. I felt like the ending seemed a little too easy but I really liked the world a lot... and once again the gods. I think ultimately how I feel about it will be determined by reading the sequel.

I think 100kk could have been better if it didn't read so much as a Sandman fanfic :> and the ending was rushed, and the style overall felt a bit forced, so I gave the book 3/5 stars, but it was amazingly readable (I read it in two days, and those were busy days.)

I have actually heard that the author hadn't actually read Sandman at all... but it does definitely feel quite derivative anyway.

I didn't really love the heroine particularly either.

But yes, it was very readable and enjoyable while reading. I think I just wanted it to be AMAZING instead of just a good read. I wanted it to be a four star book and it just wasn't.

Oh, I didn't know Toby #4 was out -- I still need to catch up on Artificial Night

I really liked Dragonsbane (Jenny Waynest is such an interesting character -- you don't find a lot of career-vs-motherhood tension in fantasy; hell, in interesting genre fiction in general). The sequel went off in a kind of weird direction, but I really liked the first book ( ... )

If we end up seeing each other, I will lend you the latest two Toby Daye's. I feel like they have gotten a lot better kind of like what happened with the early Dresden novels... also a lot more epic ( ... )

Hi! It was great to see you today and to meet Jeremy (who I hope wasn't too bored by our discussion of Sandman and other things he hadn't read) As always, could've kept talking for hours yet -- next time, hopefully! :) I've already started reading An Artificial Night and am enjoying it greatly so far -- I was really in the mood for urban fantasy PI stuff, apparently ( ... )

Jeremy is very used to my going on about things forever. I think he was kind of relieved to just sit and zone out and watch the game after the late night the day before. And as always... I am eager to continue talking when next we meet.

Cat's Claw was actually an improvement over Death's Daughter so I was lured into hope for the third one... but no it is the worst one yet.

I have massively Conflicted Feelings about Fledgling. I wonder how our different takes on Butler bode for me + the Parable of the Sower (although I don't have any immediate plans to read it; I do have her Lilith's Brood/Xenogenesis trilogy waiting on deck).

Also hurry up and read The Broken Kingdoms so I can complain about it to you.

I would not say I did not have conflicted feelings about Fledgling. I just eventually decided the stuff I liked outweighed the stuff I did not. Whereas in Parable of the Sower I was not really sure that was the case.
