"Thermodynamic Miracles"

To think that once a young man
saw a girl on a motorcycle on Cherokee Street
and decided to fall in love with her;
To think that one day, they had a son
who they pushed and pushed until
he found himself on scholarship to a state school;
To think that there was a girl at that school
who happened to be writing a paper
which happened to call for a nerd;
To think the young man
had grown up playing Dungeons and Dragons
and writing fantasies until the small hours;

To think they would meet
at the campus writing center;
To think that all of this
could lead to conversation
could lead to a car ride
could lead to a kiss.

As a rule, I don't believe in fate.
But to think of everything which had to be,
every domino stacked in sequence,
to be here sitting, watching your ceiling fan
at one in the morning with your body tucked
warmly against mine-

Well, sometimes I have my doubts.
