The D80 is great, but we may see a revision at somepoint in the future. I don't think too soon, since the D60 came out.

The D40 would be a sidegrade/slight downgrade due to it only being able to use AF-S (inside the lens) focus if you wanted auto-focus. If you aren't planning on using any older lenses or primes, then a D40 wouldn't be too bad.

The D40x was the 10 megapixel version, but from what I understand it is being phased out for the D60. Basically a smaller body than the D40, with its basic ergonomics but some features cribbed from the D300.

I completely forgot to reply to your post in my one thread. Sorry about that.

What's your budget?

I'm gonna assume you still have your Nikon lenses, as this makes a huge difference.

If you do still have your lenses and are looking for just a body, I would highly recommend going with a d80. It's about $740 or so after shipping on eBay, and so long as you get one from someone with over 5000 positive reviews (i.e., a storefront), you're pretty safe. If they have the PayPal $2000 protection (and most should), you're even safer.

The d80 is a fantastic camera, it's not that much more intricate or complex than the d40, and it has a ton of features that make it a clear winner. The d60 is coming out soon, but even with its improvements and features, I still think the d80 is a bigger winner. It's a completely different weight class.

I had a d80 for about a year and loved it every step of the way. You won't be disappointed, and it's better to spend a little more than you were planning and get something great than stay entirely within budget and get something not as good as what you could've had. :)
