i think it tells one what the novel is about without telling one what the novel is about.

but i don't know what the purpose of the tag line is.

So...would that be a good thing or a bad thing?

The tag line is used to lead into a broader synopsis, usually about a paragraph in length, which is supposed to go into a little bit further detail regarding plot, characters, etc.

i guess i don't know how much it's supposed to stand out, shout 'this is why i'm different from the hundred other novels you've got in your queue.' since one line can hardly do justice to an entire novel, it's gotta be one of the hardest things to craft.

i'm just talking out of my ass here, but "if you could get j.d. salinger, georges perec, and john lennon together in one room (you couldn't) and force them to stay there until they'd produced a novel together, it might look a little bit like this tale of one young man's introduction to the world. one thing's for certain, you'd want copies of both on your bookshelf."

yes it's two lines. i'm allergic to brevity.

you'd be amazed at the sort of crap people submit to agents. not to say mine is inherently superior to theirs, but i do find what i wrote to be more and more appropriate with each passing minute. maybe some fine tuning, but i think i'm finally heading in the right direction ( ... )
