Haven't tried Acorn, though I did try Seashore and some other GIMP-derivatives. They just don't do enough to replace Photoshop like GIMP (almost) can. Sad.
Ultimately, it was the bloat and the crappiness of Finder that got me so fed up. We've been asking Apple to fix Finder for...well...as long as OS X has existed. And it wasn't great in OS 9 either, though I was never a die-hard Apple guy until OS X.
As for bloat, well, I did everything I could to strip OS X down so I could keep it alongside Linux, and the smallest I could get it was 15 GB. I've installed practically all the software I need on Ubuntu, dumped 18 GB of my personal junk on it, and I'm using 21 GB total. When I found myself deleting 3.5 GB of printer drivers from OS X, that was sort of the last straw.

I understand the feeling. I’m still sticking with OS X for the time being, though.
I’ve actually found Acorn to be a good image editor.
