I grew up using "Happy Holidays" as a shortcut for "Merry Christmas and Happy New Year." Now that
I'm all experienced and enlightened, I'm all about being inclusive and crap, so "Happy Holidays" is a great shortcut for "Merry Whatever You May or May Not Celebrate on or around the Winter Solstice and a Happy New Year if You Follow the Gregorian ( Read more... )

I try to only wish people a merry Christmas if i know they will actually be celebrating Christmas. If they'll be celebrating Hanukkah or the solstice or wishing everything weren't closed on the 25th, I'd rather actually wish them a happy thing they'll be celebrating. Which I feel is sort of like the opposite of taking the Christ out of Christmas, but being a soulless heathen I'm clearly wrong.
