Exactly five pm (and not a second after), the lights dim at the stadium, only to return gradually, first as glittering bursts of pink and yellow right under the glass floor of the main field, then as a pulsing stream from above, rhythmically undulating around the cheerful dance beat that spills out from hidden loudspeakers. The girl, who almost seems to be dancing in the air on the glass floor, looks younger than your average fourteen-year-old - but she is actually a twenty-something, as hard-boiled as the corporation public relation executives. Sofia, New Babylon's perky little superstar, starts the game with a song called 'Wired Up', holograms of desert rising up around the tiny popstar and her crew of backup dancers. She's wearing a tiny little dress composed of the colors of both teams, and she ends the show with loud cheers for all the players.
If you didn't think the screaming could get any louder, you were wrong. Once the players run out to the field, the sheer volume of the noise is ear-splitting. Wide screens at the railings of the bleachers spit out an endless stream of 3-D advertisements, pulsing lights, player introductions. The glass field ripples with a few of the chosen corporations' logos before quieting down to a green soccer field with white lines. The referees hover few feet above the ground on anti-gravity disks, and on a blow of a whistle, the game is begun.
Lower bleachers
Under the field, the seats are over booked, the air is stifling, the crowd packed tight and everyone craning their necks to see the game. Sometimes a few might get stamped to the floor under the endless sea of pedaling feet. But at least they're all unanimous of their support of the Tigers. Occasionally a small riot might break out, fueled with drugs and smuggled weapons. But the guards usually manage to escort out the hooligans - some who might die on the way - but that is the unfortunate side of sport, isn't it?
Middle bleachers
These are the best seats, some say. On the same level with the field itself, it's probably easiest to see the game. The price of the seats climbed up fast, and in the end it was a bloody war to get a seat at the middle bleachers. There is more room than at the lower level, but you still have to occasionally brush elbows with your neighbor. Beautiful girls in small dresses in colors of both of the teams hover around on anti-gravity disks, selling drinks and snacks, pamphlets and various memorabilia. Sometimes fights break out, mostly when fanatic supporters feel the need to move the game up to the bleachers.
Upper bleachers
The upper parts are mostly just a line of private booths, expensive and extravagant, equipped with private servants and all possible conveniences. However, it's common to mingle, the cream of society often more interested in the social benefits of this kind of event than the sport itself. It's a perfect opportunity to strike a deal or two, exchange elegant jabs over a flute of champagne with your enemies and maybe gain a tidbit of something interesting along the way.
Your Broadcasters
Joel Bloom is the perfect broadcaster. He keeps rattling about the game, the players, the managers, the coaches, just about everything and anything without even a breath in between. He knows everything there is to know about the teams from rumors to real news, the dirt and the praise, everything. He only shuts up when his co-host...
Sofia puts in with her adorably ignorant commentary, asking questions perhaps many in the audience would like to ask themselves.
