Edinburgh Festival(s)

We made a draft itinerary for the Europe portion of our trip and I suddenly realized that that we tentatively scheduled a visit to Scotland during Edinburgh Festival season. Should we go? How should we go? Where would we stay? Any advice?

Scottish YHA are pretty good, from experience. I'll be there Aug 30 - 1 sept.

Do you know Craig Richmond? He lives in Livingston, which is a short train ride from Edinburgh. He put us up a few years ago during the festival and he likes having visitors.

We saw the Edinburgh Military Tattoo and I loved it. There was also lots of street theatre, but that was all we saw, festivall-wise.

You're welcome to stay. A friend just returned from traveling overseas and is about to stay briefly, but she should have found herself somewhere to stay by then and if not I'll just eject her to another friend's house for the duration.

Festival seasons runs through most of August.

Go look here for details of the festival itself. There is more than you can possibly see and there will be all sorts of people who you've heard of doing shows or taking part in things.

I'd say yes, even if only for a few days. And think about booking tickets for high prifile stuff as soon as you can (good things sell out in advance), but go even if you don't, because there are always tickets for lesser known stuff going. If you don't have tickets to something on a given day, just go in and do pot luck for what you can get.

Accomodation is the only issue - the population of festival goers might actually be bigger than the normal population of Edinburgh, IIRC - but Craig might be able to help you solve that.
