Getting caught does tend to be the mark of a poor hack.

Did he post on various journals saying "Hey, it's me. You can't catch me"

Plus was it much of a hack? I heard all he did was the password recovery with answers like "Husband's name" "First Street Address"

Pretty much. Once he had access he posted the information up on /b/ in 4chan. The anonymous proxy he used... wasn't anonymous and kept his IP address. He posted under his known user name.
