Supposing...Americans are the nicest people on earth

I, personally, like the "fuck off and leave me alone" attitude of most members of the UK service force. I generally want to punch waiters/waitresses in American restaurants. Does that make me a smug asshole?

No it doesn't, it just means that you've now fully acclimatised (sic), much to my rising chagrin. Sometimes I think I have, and then sometimes I hope I haven't. It is a bit of a cheap and easy target though, the difference between. Bill Bryson covered it years ago, and in a much funnier way too. Methinks Brooker can do better than this, although I did get a nice morning shot of righteous indignation from it, and so awesome to you for that and have a nice day.

It is an obvious target, but an inescapable one if you're visiting the US, I'd imagine.

Well yes, it is the acting nicer which is the problem. Its not genuine, which makes it awkward, uncomfortable and thoroughly annoying. Managing some sort of banter with British folk in the service industry is much more rewarding because of the general "i'm getting paid to do this and that, not look after your every need. If you have a problem, ask, and if you don't ask, don't blame me" attitude.
