Thanks for posting this, and for offering the suggestions for "what to do." They're all good ideas, and much better than the "wear offensive T-shirts and hand out condoms regardless" one I had. :)

There's the famous Australian tradition of civil liberties again. Australia, it seems, still hasn't shaken off the culture of arbitrary authority from its days as a set of penal colonies; the veneer of rule of law and civilised liberalism over it is all too thin.

They did when the Olympics were on, and I think when the APEC summit happened. Not sure about what happens in Vic, though. NSW seems to have a name for dodgy police powers.

It's becoming depressingly common, starting with the ludicrous over-reaction to 9-11 and Bali...

I just want someone to show me where in Australian law we (or at least, that group of 'we' who are Catholic) are guaranteed a right to freedom from being offended.
