Also. What is with so many yarns only being sold in 50g skeins? The hell? I mean, yeah, maybe so you don't buy more than exactly what you need for a project, but wouldn't you like the option of, say, buying two 500g skeins and then however many 100 or 50g to make up the last bit? I hate joining. I hate weaving

What type of fiber are you using? If wool, you can spit splice. If not wool, then use a Russian join. A lot of thinner (esp. fingering weight) yarns are sold in 50g skeins because that is the average amount for a single sock. Also, larger skeins are harder to ball up. And if you are doing colorwork you don't want to have a huge amount of yarn leftover. One option is to look online for companies that do sell in larger quanities - I know some companies sell cones of yarn online but not in stores.
