My dad is a philosopher

I wrote to my dad about Bastien. He wrote me back something beautiful.

the pain you feel is an honor that your soul pays to the soul of the one you've lost )

Yeah, his pets are really his only companions other than his family. My dad has never been able to make friends easily. He was devestated when Dune, our Rhodesian Ridgeback, had to be put down for cancer, and the two years in which they lost three cats was really, really hard for him. He refused to get any more cats after that year.

My dad continues to amaze me with how deeply and eloquently he can talk about emotions for a guy who almost never talks about his own.

That is really beautiful, and I love the idea of grief creating the place for memories. That is an incredible way to look at it. Your dad is so great.

I hope you don't mind a very belated response to this post, still catching up on the past month. I just read this post and the one you wrote about Bastien's life. So sad, but also lovely. Your post really honored Bastien, and your dad's words are very moving and I hope I can remember them the next time I lose someone.

Sending some very overdue hugs your way.
