random Word problem

My dissertation advisor, with whom I am co-authoring a paper, is a native French speaker. When she sends me Word documents, written in English, and I open them, Word prompts me to install the French keyboard, and I always decline.

In French typesetting, there is often a small space between the sentences and the non-period punctuation. It is not usually as wide as a normal space. Also, there is usually only one space between sentences, instead of two. This spacing is referred to as French spacing.

Hopefully, these documents haven't reset your default Word preferences. I don't know how word documents do this, but they do, and good luck resetting it if this has happened. It's reason #2174 not to use Word.
