Best books?

While I'm pretty sure most of you read the AV Club without my sending you there, I wanted those missing out to know that they released their lists of the best short story collections and the best books of the decade today.

I've only read three of these books: Freakonomics, The Blind Assassin, and The Time Traveler's Wife. I hated the Atwood ( Read more... )

I've read most of the fiction ones and some of the non-fiction ones. The two fiction ones you absolutely shouldn't miss would be The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay (one of my top five favorite books of all time) and The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao. I'm about 150 pages into Middlesex right now and it's quite good. The Corrections ushered in the short period of the mega-novel, so it's worth reading for its historical importance.

As far as non-fiction goes, everyone probably has to read The Tipping Point at some point. I have The World Without Us but haven't read it yet.

Mr. Potter is significant, inne?

Nothing here that I hated. I stand by my 52 Books #7 opinion that The Dog In the Nighttime is a well-done stunt without a ton of actual depth. Could use almost the same words about Nickled & Dimed. Enjoyed Jonathon Strange for what it is, although I know some people I've recommended it to that got bogged down. Also quite enjoyed The Terror. Even so, I don't read a ton of contemporary fiction, but surely there'd be enough top-of-top-flight stuff out there in a decade to crowd those two off the list. Dunno.
