A conversation I've now had twice (and counting)

Jul 15, 2010 15:11

Me: Dan and I exchanged wedding gifts today/yesterday.

Other person: Oh! What did he get you?

Me: A chaise longue! It's really comfortable.

Other: A what?

Me: A chaise longue.

Other: What's that?

Me: A chase lounge.

Other: Oh, a chase lounge. Nice. [Provides incorrect etymology]

See, the incorrect etymology bit is possibly specific to your personal friend-base. But awesome! You can lounge upon it langoriously and have absinthe and paperback novels. Or that's what I would do.

Both the same. The common folk etymology is that it's a chair for lounging on, hence chaise lounge. In fact, dictionary.com now lists that as an alternate spelling. I think most Americans pronounce it that way, really.
