Good News for My Upcoming Big Bang Fic? Bad News? ARGH!! I'm so neurotic.

Feb 18, 2013 18:02

I have signed up for my first big bang, the Supernatural Crossover Big Bang.   I pretty much assumed that maybe 2 or 3 people would read my fic since it is kind of an obscure crossover.  I had planned to do a crossover with the Dean Koontz' character Odd Thomas.   My plan was to do pre-book series, because I didn't want to completely spoil the ( Read more... )

writing is hard, ramblings

You know what's weird? The movie supposedly comes out in 6 weeks, and there's no trailer. NOWHERE. I find that very peculiar. I'm wondering if it's been pushed back a ways, because something as potentially popular as a film based on a best-selling series of books... there'd be a trailer.

So you may be okay. I wish you luck with it! Odd has a very distinctive voice that I think I'd find tricky to capture. I'm curious to see what you come up with!

You are right. That is weird about the trailer. My husband and I go to the movies quite often and I would have remembered if I had seen a trailer for that. I would have squeed aloud!

With the mass shooting in book 1, I wonder if there might be some hesitation on the part of the studio. It hasn't been long since CT. Maybe there's a fear it would be in bad taste? It is such a hot button issue these days.

And I'm sweating it with getting Odd's voice down. You're right, he is very distinctive and I love him so much I'd hate to screw him up. He's almost as adorable as Dean.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for the movie to come out. So your fic is good to go!

ahhh.... so it's not the mass shooting thing. Thanks for the heads up. That could definitely hold things up a while. Hopefully they'll get it settled one day (after the big bang ;) I would like to eventually see the movie.

I say, don't watch it until you've finished writing. And then you can reward yourself with it. =) (And then if it sucks, you'll like your story because it's so much better. And if it's awesome you'll feel good about the idea that more people might read it.)

Yeah, I probably shouldn't watch the movie. It would just mess with my head, then I might panic and try to re-write the story. It just annoys me. I hate it when canon becomes murky. That always happens when a movie comes out.

That's why sometimes I have trouble writing Supernatural fic. Every time there's a new episode I have a little freak out about my WIPs. Before Supernatural I was primarily writing Harry Potter and there were years between books, which meant being able to really get into things before JKR changed canon again.

Ignore the movie and go with your gut! :D Worst case scenario? Readers who watched the movie will read your fic, realize it's different from the movie, and actually hunt up the book to read ;) (Also, yes, I hope there's Elvis, and also, yes, they've pushed this movie release back so many times they'll probably do it again.) I like that you're writing it for people with no Odd experience *hee*; I know several readers love outsider POV, so they'll probably go for it...

Are you going to set the SPN timeline with the Odd timeline? I think the Odd book was out in 2003, which would be about 2 years preseries for SPN...Hmm could bring up that line fans love to play with about Sam and Dean not seeing each other for two years...

Oh,and am I remembering right? Doesn't Stormy have a gun love? (I remember why Odd definitely doesn't.) Oh, and the cooking? Will Dean experience those wonderful flapjacks of Odd's? :D

Oh, gosh, I'm comment-babbling...I'm on sleep-inducing meds. Sorry. :)

Dean HAS to eat some of Odd's cooking. Odd is the world's best short-order cook after all. And yes, Stormy had a gun and wanted Odd to get one, but Odd was afraid of them and well... you know how that goes.

I haven't decided re: timeline. It could be pre-SPN series. That is an idea re: the 'last time they saw eachother' for 2 years. Then again, for some reason I think it would be fun for it to be later in the SPN timeline. I can imagine a 19-year-old Odd calling a thirty-something Dean 'sir' a lot and that amuses me. I tend to have very little respect for canon timelines when it comes to crossovers *hangs head*

Write what you want to write and don't see the movie till after you are done. If you are unhappy with the movie or it's too different, make a note that it's written to fit to the book
It's OK, you can do this

Thanks :) Guess you noticed I'm freaking. I am quite the Nervous Nelly at times. Sometimes I think I should smoke pot. I remember it was very mellowing (from a different life of course. I mean, I've heard stories.). But, I'm too nervous about it being illegal and I have NO control over the munchies. Perhaps I should move to Colorado or Washington State? *ponders* Nah, I could never leave the South.

I say, write whatever the fuck you want and ignore canon! Yours will probably be better anyway.

Your journal is awesome and hilarious (LOVE THIS ICON), may I add you?
