iTunes, how are you so crazy?, or, friendslist genie, please solve my problem magically, okay?

Okay, so, I hate to complain but - oh wait, never mind, I love to complain. You knew that, right? But I don't have much time so I will just omit the complaining for now. Let's just say that the nice guys at the computer store where the computer goes for fixing have taken to calling me "ipod girl," as in "hey look, ipod girl is back again!" ( Read more... )

Wait, are you on a mac? What was happening to your files and how did they fix it? My itunes has been randomly re-naming and moving music files for over a year now, and the apple geniuses are clueless.

Nope, PC. Elsewhere people are telling me that itunes is notoriously buggy on PCs but runs well on macs. Thus I am soothed to hear of your misfortune - sorry!

Damn, I got my hopes up there for a minute! Oh well, I've managed to rescue as much as possible on DVDs, the rest of it can re-name itself into happy oblivion and I'll start over with a new computer at some point.

I wish I had something useful to give you on the duplicates; I had something similar happen during an ill-fated attempt to restore my library, and I just organized it all alphabetically and took a few hours to kill the extras.

We're talking THREE THOUSAND and some that would have to be killed ... that will be ... well, a lot of hours, I'm afraid.

Are there duplicate files on your computer (like, every mp3 is on there twice) or just duplicate listings in iTunes?

You know about duplicate view, right? You can go under the File menu on Macs (sorry, don't know the PC version) and tell it to just show those files which have duplicates. It might save you a little time, anyway. And if you do find out a way to automate the deletions, let me know . . .
