Meh. I'm here a lot, usually, just not so much for the past few years for life reasons. But this is where my archives are, and also (this visit) this is where the conference is.

But OK, so, the middle of the story is this: Everyone I know here is completely freaked out by the level of violence. As a friend of mine put it, the "insecurity" used to be far away, in Ciudad Juarez and places like that (in the north of the country) but now it's here. And it used to happen to criminals and the super-rich, but now it happens to us. So ... actually, it's a bit like deep winter in Ontario. You have to stop and think before you leave the house, and make sure that you are adequately prepared for emergencies, because it is dangerous out there and if you just wander out into the street without taking precautions (putting on coat and hat and longjohns, or making sure to only get into the right kind of taxi and locking all your doors twice and never staying out after dark, depending) you could die.

Hell yeah, I'm back in the house before dark. I am really clear on this point. Horrifying shit has happened to people I know.

Just when I'm thoroughly and absolutely furious at the Obama administraton for their lack of cojones, they do something like this to restore the faith. Keep safe, my dear.

So far, so good! I'm having a lot of fun and nothing bad has happened yet. And I found some cool stuff in the archives.
