Google+ plus bad TV

Jul 08, 2011 14:01

So, I am trying out Google+, half-heartedly. I hate change! On the other hand, I kind of hate Facebook! and spend so much time there anyway! and so if Google+ allows me to consolidate what I like about LJ/DW with what I like about Facebook, that would be nice ( Read more... )

Found you on Google+ using my super-sekrit (not!) real life identity and your summary of Fringe makes it clear I really wouldn't much like it. Thanks for saving me the trouble!

Yay! I found you back!

There is a lot of Toronto scenery on view in Fringe, which is set in Boston, so you might like that. For example bad guys like to use warehouses and parking lots in the Distillery District as their labs (for evil science) and hideouts (for stashing evil tools and kidnap victims.) Also, Big Giant Evil Corporation of Doom has its offices in what is pretty clearly the top floor of the new wing of the ROM, and the FBI has their Boston office on the second floor of the new wing of the ROM, so that's pretty funny.

Well, spot the Toronto location is always good for lolz! I have to admit stopping to watch bits of old episodes of Forever Knight and Relic Hunter when they show up on TV, just to tell the girls, "Hey, I used to go to that pub they're driving past! And that's UC at UofT!"

I haven't watched the show, but I'm told it underwent a near-reboot in season 2, jettisoned a lot of the stuff that didn't work, and became quite enjoyable. But I never got past (like half an ep of) s1, so I can't tell you for sure :D

Hmmmmm. Yeah, opinions seem to be mixed about that reboot. I really want to like this show, it seems exactly like my type of show, and yet ... hmmmm.

I'm pretty fond of Fringe, and it's definitely all about Walter. The science is silly, and the locations are ridic, but Walter and his world have a certain honesty that's refreshing on TV. (For example, the ep where Lance Reddick accidentally ingests LSD, and trips in a pretty realistic way.) Season 2 is definitely a pretty big switch-up, I think for the better. Once we get into the dual universes, John Noble (and Leonard Nimoy) chew the scenery in the most amusing ways.

I just can't get into the fan scene at all, though, because it's all about the obvious ship. Bo-ring. But I gotta love that the Hot Chick is always glamorous while wearing Shoes You Can Run In.

Well, we are holding on for Leonard Nimoy, and also Marcus Giamatti. But ... sheesh. You know?

We've tried it twice, and keep bouncing off of it - we get maybe two or three episodes in and lose all interest. I'm not sure why.

I am curious what you will think of Fringe once you finish season 1. I think by that point it grows into its own as an honest-to-God quality show, and not just a "guilty pleasure" or "so bad it's good" (which to be fair I never thought it was, but for me it really found its stride with the overarching arc and how all the family drama is interwoven with that, and the monster-of-the-week episodes mostly didn't do much for me).

We have two episodes left of s1 and it has definitely improved. I'm not sure I would move it out of the guilty-pleasure box just yet, but at least it is giving us pleasure...
