There are lots of food related nicknames for people. Sugar. Honey. Cupcake. Dumpling. I don't know why - but I'm starting to get REALLY irritated by the use of the word "chocolate" to describe black women...and men too I guess. We are chatting about this in FB, so I don't want to repeat. But I hate referring to people as "chocolate." It sounds like people trying too hard to not say the word "black."

Please explain to this white girl--is black bad? Because African American isn't quite right, not every black person I know is African descent. Chocolate sounds awful and demeaning...

(My possible future father in law is the first to call me uncooked chicken. I actually thought it was pretty accurate.)

*I* don't think black is bad, though I can't figure out if it's supposed to be capitalized or not. I think it's got awkward associations for non-black people, and I think that when looked at beside African-American people feel that it's a step backward? Like it's the equivalent of negro or colored somehow.

LOL - uncooked chicken, gross. Is this a thing? Did he actually *call* you uncooked chicken as a substitute for your name, or did he say you were the color of uncooked chicken?

I can't say I wouldn't mind people saying "your skin is the color of X" if they were making an observation about me specifically and not saying something clearly insulting - but yeah, not fond of the whole "hey chocolate!" thing. I'll probably respond with "hey dickless!"

We were discussing how easily I burn, and so he compared my slowly burning skin to uncooked chicken.
