From the symptoms (mistaken for hiatal hernia) it sounds like esophageal cancer. My guess is that your dad also gets chronic heartburn/acid reflux?
The bad thing about stomach and esophageal cancers is that they are the kind that, by the time symptoms show up, the cancer has already metastasized and it is usually too late. Sometimes they can be surgically removed if the tumor is still localized enough, but those stages are usually detected by a routine upper GI exam before it actually starts bothering you. I hope I'm wrong, but just going by what you've posted, it's not good...at all.
