You'd have to read up online about Ayn Rand. She had this philosophy called "Objectivism" (not to be confused with being objective) that the book was based upon. There was a whole 80-some-page long chapter near the end of the book that explained it in excrutiating detail (and it was dovetailed in about as well as the average two-minute infomercial break fits into whatever TV show you actually tuned in to see). I made it maybe five pages into that chapter, and then skipped to the next chapter; it started repeating itself, but in slight variations, like Mojo Jojo.
If you're into local relevance, the head of the Minnesota Taxpayers League is a huge fan of Objectivism...which explains a lot, actually.
There was a slight sci-fi aspect to the book that kept me interested enough to actually finish it, but after that I was more than happy to put it down and not pick it up again.
