It knows that the ingestion of that last Sacrifice has given It sufficient strength to return Home. But first, It has the Final Imperative to perform. Whilst It is perfectly capable of budding alone to produce offspring, It must seed ’R’th with Buds that It has created between Itself and a denizen of the planet before It is allowed to leave.
In reaching blindly for T’m, It had - all subconsciously - taken to Itself the key to Its buried memories; and thus to Its means of escape. Slowly It raises Its generative organs - the ones which T’m had mistakenly supposed to be ‘claws’.
Protected by an aeon-long accretion of chalk-mineral the Budlings have now been quickened by T’m’s seed. It had taken a chance that T’m might be a compatible life-form (unlike the fish It had tried once before); and It has been proved right. If only It had realised before that humans are a gendered species, It might have been free of this place aeons ago!
Already It can sense the beginnings of a separation in several of Its ‘claws’. ( ... )

It took me a moment to continue reading after the sudden declaration that James had died - and from Lachlan's mouth too. But apart from that this fic had me smiling from start to finish. So clever in places and so very original all throughout.
And now Tom has tentacle babies! I sort of wish they'll turn out to mature very fast and find Tom anyway, he'd be an adorable father to a group of abominations. XD
