Unprompted: The Young Princes of New Labour 1a anonymous August 20 2010, 02:18:10 UTC
Inspired by Diane Abbott calling all the boys "The young princes [...] of New Labour" at a Q and A in Manchester. The earth was turning ashen grey as Lord Mandelson and the four boys rode through the castle gates. The sky was not falling (Lord Mandelson, a man sensitive to the workings of the supernatural, was certain of this), but it was bleaching pale black with a strange urgency, much more desperate than the usual change of season as winter threatened summer ( ... )

The first two boys were brothers, sons of a diplomat. Lord Mandelson knew of the diplomats loyalty, and knew his sons would have the same utmost dedication as their father had shown. Lord Mandelson met them at the port, where the diplomat had arrived by boat only three months before. Although their English was accented, they spoke it fluently, and the eldest's knowledge of international affairs was surprisingly compelling for twelve year old. His younger brother was quieter, and less forthcoming, but Lord Mandelson could see he was only shadowed by the presence of his brother and, perhaps, his father. (The youngest seemed unable to let go of his father's hand ( ... )

Mandelson noticed the brothers go to their knees in practiced elegance, bowing their heads. Andrew went as soon as he could tear his eyes from the gilded interior of one of the more lavish rooms of the palace, out of (what Mandelson interpreted to be) more fear than respect. Edward went last, still smirking, bowing his head deeply but still sneaking glances whenever he thought he could ( ... )

This promises to be utterly brilliant. I love the world you've created.

And, um, isn't Andy a bit young to be in a tavern?

A season later, Lord Mandelson had set all four boys with a tutor. The work was hard (mostly memorising facts for King Anthony and figures for King Gordon) but all four took to it with their own styles of dedication. Lord Mandelson discretely observed King Gordon's continued distance from all four princes, preferring to eat on his own as before, and how King Anthony would insist on taking all of his meals with the boys. His friendly charm and open warmth (for which Mandelson always regarded King Anthony highly) often insisted on an open flow of ideas in a conversation, and that was something which all four boys enjoyed. Lord Mandelson enjoyed it too. The kings’ arguments were tired and worn, and Lord Mandelson leapt on any opportunity to engage in debates fresh with the blood of youth. The younger princes were devastatingly intelligent, and what they lacked in knowledge they made up for three fold in their eagerness to learn ( ... )

Lord Mandelson was now a servant of all four boys, as he was loyal to the crown, but only the elder Prince Edward seemed to not treat him with any respect at all. The other three were still very wary of a man who dealt mostly in darkness and offered a presence which often accompanied unexplained shivering. Luckily, Lord Mandelson did not mind the disrespect from Prince Edward. A boy of ten really had no respect to give ( ... )

Prince Andrew found Prince Edward angry, thuggish and quick to outbursts, but he was also fiercely protective and slightly sullen at times, which intrigued Andrew greatly. (In addition, he knew what a football was, which elevated him far above both the other princes in Prince Andrew’s mind ( ... )
