Mr Churchill himself came in for some good-natured ribbing from all sides for this attack, given that his own Liberal party have generously agreed to stand aside in Mr Lansbury's consituency to enable him to fight the Conservatives. Allusions were also made to Mr Churchill's great friend Mr Lloyd George (who, we learned, knew Miss Lloyd's father, and knew him jolly well), and to the Prime Minister, whose wife's ambitious ways have long made her the butt of satire. Mr Strachey's biting observations on life at Number Ten Downing Street ('Mr Asquith must surely have called the election to avoid having to spend his weekends with Margot') provoked mirth from all corners ( ... )
