'Ken Clarke' at Home

Stars of the enduring BBC hit, The House of Commons don't come much more enduring than Artie MacDougall who plays Ken Clarke in the show, now in it's 108th year. He joined the cast in 1970 as an extra (a 'hear-hear' in The House of Commons parlance) on the Conservative benches - the recordings recently uncovered in an attic in Marsh Gibbon show a masterclass in the art of coarse acting - was given a minor speaking part in 1972 as a Conservative whip and 1975 as a shadow industry spokesman, but had to wait until 1985 (the sixth Thatcher series) to be called for cabinet shoots, the Holy Grail of the series and the roles which could set an actor up for life. Artie has been refreshingly honest about The House of Commons paying off the mortgage on the house he shares with Konstantin Halil, who played Norman Tebbit ( ... )

"Well, of course Stefan [Nick Clegg] is very good, and he was brought in to be a foil to Cameron - [Ming Campbell] wasn't pleased, and neither were the rest of us oldies, it felt like a bit of a clearout, to be honest, and for a show that prided itself on employing actors who had faces for radio, it felt like a betrayal. But now the shine's been taken off him and some of the more characterful oldies have returned, we're all a bit happier and the threat of Equity action has receded, as it has for the lack of women in decent roles. And with The Bill finishing and the wizard stuff in the can, there's more supply than demand for actors these days, so the new intake in May couldn't have come at a better time ( ... )
